Despite wintry temperatures, we made an area near Wolfsbach with almost 900 trees fit for the future at the beginning of April. In addition to the usual tree species such as silver fir, English oak and hornbeam, this time we also had some tree species that were new to us such as black walnut, white elm, black alder and wild apple. Planting took place in 2 shifts with our motivated volunteers and of course a break with food and lively exchange was also a must. We are excited to see how the different species grow!

In November, we planted the Klimawald 5.0 on a 0.5 ha area owned by the Landwirtschaftliche Lehranstalten of the district of Upper Franconia near Geigenreuth. We received active support from the mountain bikers of the Bärenleite Trails. The area was damaged by drought and bark beetle and is therefore characterized by a lighter and a shadier part with old growth. In the latter part, we therefore planted shade-tolerant species such as silver fir and hemlock fir, while in the lighter part, we planted European aspen, sweet chestnut, copper beech, and hornbeam. Outside the fence, a few wild cherries are growing now. In addition, natural regeneration will play an important role, especially of oak saplings. Since spruce regeneration has already established itself in some areas of the site, maintenance measures will have to be considered here in the coming years.

Our 4th planting action took place in the Fichtelgebirge in cooperation with the Stadtwerke Bayreuth and numerous support by students. The afforested area is located near the Grassemann. A large part of the drinking water that supplies Bayreuth comes from this region. Therefore, the reforestation is particularly important for a sustainable water supply in the future. Three different concepts are being used on the 10,000 m² site, "the new experimental laboratory". One third is left to nature for natural regeneration. On the second third, we planted trees that are rather unusual for the Fichtelgebirge, such as the yew, silver fir, hemlock and Bornmüller fir, which are considered great hopes for the Fichtelgebirge. And on the last part, mainly drought-resistant tree species such as sweet chestnut and sessile oak were planted. The plan is to follow the development of these approximately 1,000 trees on the research side, and thus draw conclusions for further planting campaigns.

Small but nice - that's how you could describe our internal planting event in March 2021. The area was an area of the company Lauterbach, which had to be cleared due to nature conservation requirements. For the reforestation, there were various requirements from the nature conservation authority, so that we finally decided on the following strategy. The primary goal on this area is the establishment of natural regeneration, i.e. reduce forest management to a minimum (which is often difficult for the foresters). Whether natural regeneration will develop a forest that is sufficiently well adapted to future conditions, only time will tell and must be constantly monitored and documented. Pedunculate oak and chestnut were planted (as these would not naturally establish). Both are species that fit this rather problematic, wet and nutrient-poor site and should be adapted to climate change. This gives us some assurance that together with natural regeneration, we will have a forest that can provide the expected ecosystem services in 100 years, which may not be the case with natural regeneration alone. Also still interesting: the trees were planted circularly in "Nelder wheels".

Despite Corona and winter mood, in December, after a long break, it was finally time to plant trees again. Pubescent oaks, sessile oaks, Turkey oaks, sweet chestnuts as well as the Lebanon cedar and the Atlas cedar were planted. We received support from students of the University of Bayreuth as well as from the city forester's office. Unlike the previous planting events, this event was only possible through donations for the financing of the seedlings. In this sense we would like to thank all donors again.

We thinned a hectare of spruce-pine forest damaged by drought and storm, and reforested it with 11 coniferous and deciduous tree species. In teams of 2, we planted silver fir, hornbeam, tree hazel, winter linden, Nordmann fir, copper beech, sessile oak, bird cherry, Douglas fir, and service tree - 7 of which are native, 4 coming either from southern Europe, the Mediterranean mountains, or North America. How our 1st planting weekend went exactly, you can read here.
